Instituto Reúna is a non-profit organization created to ensure quality and consistency in basic education. Each of these initiatives supports the education system to ensure the quality of learning that all Brazilian students are entitled. Reúna was founded in 2019 by former Secretary of Basic Education of the Ministry of Education, Katia Smole.

Why We Invested

According to the OECD, many of the highest performing education systems in the world have rigorous academic standards. In 2018, Brazil approved the country’s first set of national learning standards, and while the legislation reflects a huge opportunity to significantly improve the quality of education in the country, whether or not the standards catalyze real change will largely depend on implementation. Reuna was founded in 2019, in partnership between Omidyar Network and Lemann Foundation, as technical and pedagogical expert to support the stakeholders – states, municipalities, publishers, and assessment companies – in implementing the country’s new learning standards.
