Focus Area: Littlest Learners
Region: United States
Sector: Non-Profit
Investment Year: 2018
All Our Kin is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that trains, supports, and sustains family child care providers to ensure that children and families have the foundation they need to succeed in school and in life. Their work transforming the nation’s child care system results in a triple win: child care providers succeed as business owners; working parents find stable, high-quality care for their children; and children gain an educational foundation that lays the groundwork for achievement in school and beyond.

Why We Invested

Nearly 4 million caregivers currently offer care to over 7 million children from birth to age five in a home-based setting, far exceeding the number of children cared for in center-based settings (3.8 million). While one of the most popular solutions, home-based child care is a complex system, with many small providers, unlicensed and licensed, mostly lacking access to networks of support, making the quality of care vary widely. All Our Kin provides solutions increasing quality and sustainable home-based child care that could pave the way to a future vision for US communities.

What We've Learned

Currently in Connecticut and New York, All Our Kin is now expanding its impact by scaling its model. In 2018, it launched its Technical Assistance program, teaching other networks of home-based child care providers how to replicate its model. They are also working closely with various state policy makers and government workers in effort to improve publicly funded early education across the board and have recently published a report on their learnings.

At its core, our work at All Our Kin is about changing the way we think about and value children and their caregivers. Our caregivers are changing the life chances of children who deserve better. They are teaching empathy, compassion, and justice. This is what gives me hope for the future.
