Created by militants in the struggle for equitable education, Instituto de Referência Negra Peregum (Peregum) is part of the Black Brazilian movement. Peregum's mission is to strengthen Black and marginalized communities by elevating an antiracist agenda across public debates, social practices and public policies. Peregum works in partnership with initiatives, projects, organizations and collectives that focus on four programmatic areas including: Popular Education, Protection and Care, Advocacy and Climate & City.
Why We Invested
In recent years, Congress has become an important actor in the fight for human rights and education in Brazil. The low representation of the Black community across many different sectors and also the underinvestment of organizations led by Black leaders both limit their ability to advocate for more equitable educational policies. Peregum is a key actor and an incubator of Black Movement initiatives and in the Black Coalition for Rights. We are supporting the expansion and strengthening of the its educational policy advocacy team, enabling them to expand the reach of their ongoing actions, including advocating for the Quotas Law in 2023.
