The Lemann Center for Equity in Education (Lemann Center) is an independent, non-partisan, global organization dedicated to training and supporting educational leaders in Brazil and in the global South; and conducting applied research. Created by the Lemann Foundation—and part of a global network of Lemann Centers around the world— the vision for the Lemann Center in Brazil (also known as “Centro Lemann de Sobral”) is to become a global center for excellence in equity-centered educational practice. By 2031, it aims to reach two-thirds of Brazilian educational leaders.

Why We Invested

In-service professional development opportunities for educators and administrators are critical in helping to expand knowledge, reflect upon and refine practice. In Brazil, many public school educators and administrators do not have access to such opportunities; a survey conducted in 2020 revealed that only approximately 10% of public school principals had access to school management and leadership training. In addition, Brazil lacks education research centers that are intimately connected to public schools and networks, where research and practice build on each other in contextualized ways. We invested in the Lemann Center to support the Brazilian education ecosystem with leadership training for the public school system and the promotion of applied educational research.

A escola pública, que deveria ser fator de equalização, não apenas reproduz como, muitas vezes, acirra as desigualdades no nosso país. Formamos lideranças educacionais para que tenham sensibilidade, compromisso e capacidade para transformar esta realidade.
